Classification: Kingdom: Plantae. Phylum: Dicotyledonae. Family: Passifloraceae

Origin: Introduced; well established by 1921.

Status: Thrives in warm, moist habitats.

Distribution: Kaua‘i, Maui, and Hawai‘i

This plant was thought to have been introduced as a screen to hide an outhouse on Hawai‘i Island. since that introduction, it has spread to become a serious pest of forests and is found in mid to high elevations where it chokes out native trees and shrubs with its dense vines and can prevent regeneration of young koa seedlings as well as other species.
