Adults of the family Syrphidae, commonly called flower or hover
flies, are rather conspicuous. Their size ranges from 4 mm to
over 25 mm and their coloration from bright yellow or orange to
dull dark black or gray with a few iridescent forms. Many syrphid
flies are Batesian mimics of stinging Hymenoptera. Flower flies,
as their name implies, are abundant on flowers, which are used
as mating sites and energy sources. Only the microdontines are
not found associated with flowers, but rather with their ant hosts.
Immature stages are found in a diverse array of habitats. Larvae
of the subfamily Microdontinae are inquilines in ants' nests.
Those of Syrphinae are predaceous on soft-bodied arthropods, although
some may occasionally be scavengers. Those of Eristalinae can
be predaceous (Pipizini), saprophagous in litter and dead wood
(most Milesiini), coprophagous (some Rhingiini and Milesiini),
mycetophagous (some Rhingiini), phytophagous (as borers in tubers,
stems, and wood, and miners in leaves: most Rhingiini, Merodontini,
some Brachyopini), aquatic filter feeders (the rat-tailed maggots,
mainly Eristalini and some Brachyopini and Milesiini), or specialized
inquilines in social insect nests of termites, wasps, and bees
(some Volucellini and Merodontini).
The economic importance of flower flies is great. Adults are pollinators
of major significance. In some agroecosystems (orchards), they
out-perform native bees in pollinating crops. Larvae of the subfamily
Syrphinae are important predators of many pests such as aphids,
scales, thrips, and caterpillars and are rivaled only by lady-bird
beetles (coccinellids) and lacewings (chrysopids) as predators
useful for biological control. Some flower flies, however, are
detrimental. Larvae of a few species (Merodon, Eumerus)
attack bulbs and tubers of ornamentals and vegetables. Finally,
a few species have been recorded as causing accidental myiasis
in man.
Flower flies are abundant everywhere except in arid areas of the
Old World and in the extreme southern latitudes. Although flower
flies range to high latitudes in the north, they are absent from
subantarctic islands and Antarctica.
Fossil Syrphidae have been studied (Hull 1945a, 1949a), but no
fossils are known from the Australasian/Oceanian Regions.
The literature on the flower flies of these regions is diffuse.
There are no monographic studies and only a few revisions of limited
areas or genera, but flower flies are included in numerous locality
lists. Recent and major works on flower flies are few and are
primarily restricted to systematics. No comprehensive work on
the biology of these flies has ever been published. Gilbert (1986)
provided an excellent introduction, which will serve as a substitute
until his book is published.
