The Sciomyzidae, or marsh flies, consist of 4 subfamilies, with 600 species
in about 60 genera worldwide. The family is poorly represented in the Australasian/Oceanian
Regions, where only 2 subfamilies, 7 genera, and 37 native species are known.
The familial placement of the Huttonininae, with 1 genera and 7 species, has been elevated to its own family as has the Phaeomyiinae, with its single genus Pelidnoptera and one species found in the Australasian/Oceanian regions.
Life cycles of about 200 species of sciomyzid flies have been studied. Larvae
of all reared species are predators or parasitoids of molluscs, especially
aquatic, amphibious, and terrestrial pulmonate snails. The larvae of Australasian
and Oceanian species show diverse feeding habits. Larvae of Dichetophora,
Sepedomerus, and Sepedon spp. have been observed to feed on aquatic
pulmonate snails. Larvae of Eulimnia feed on sphaeriid clams, and
larvae of Neolimnia feed on aquatic or terrestrial, pulmonate, or
operculate prosobranch snails (Lynch 1965; Neff & Berg 1966; Fontana
1972; Bhuangprakone & Areekul 1973; Beaver et al. 1977; Barnes
1979c, 1980a). Several species of Sciomyzidae were introduced into the Hawaiian
Islands as biological control agents for aquatic snails that are intermediate
hosts of Fasciola, but only Sepedomerus macropus and Sepedon aenescens are believed to be established (Davis 1960, Chock et al. 1961, Davis et al. 1961, Davis & Krauss 1962, 1967,
Davis 1972, Steyskal in Hardy & Delfinado 1980).
