The family Scenopinidae is distributed worldwide and currently includes
nearly 400 described species. The Australasian/Oceanian fauna contains 86
species, mostly from Australia. Six of the 17 known genera are found in
the Australasian/Oceanian Regions, including 2 worldwide genera (Scenopinus, Metatrichia) and 4 genera endemic to Australia (Neopseudatrichia, Paramonova, Paratrichia, Riekiella).
Most of the species represented have a rather limited distributional pattern
restricted at or near the type locality. However, there are 4 species with
wide distributions undoubtedly associated with the movement of trade goods
(Scenopinus fenestralis and S. glabifrons are cosmopolitan, S. lucidus is
from Egypt, Nigeria, and the Hawaiian Islands, and S. papuanus is from Hawaii,
Taiwan, New Guinea, and Sri Lanka).
Very little is known of the larval biology except that they seem to be predators
of other insects. Larvae have been found associated with stored-grain pests,
in nests of birds and rodents, in burrows of beetle larvae attacking a rather
wide range of trees and shrubs, and in soil in association with therevid
larvae, which they closely resemble.
Adults are taken in the field by sweeping flowers with open nectaries that
are accessible to the sponging mouthparts of the adult. In buildings they
are taken at windows, giving rise to the common name "window flies"
for species of this family.
