17. Family SCATOPSIDAE
  [Originally] by Edwin F. Cook
The Scatopsidae are generally small, usually black, flies ranging in size from ca 0.6 mm to nearly 5 mm. The immature stages of only 5 or 6 species are known, and the life cycle of only 1 species has been described in any detail (Meade & Cook 1961). The immature stages of 2 cosmopolitan species (Scatopse notata and Coboldia fuscipes ) occur in a wide diversity of decaying plant and animal material such as cannery and winery waste as well as bird and mammal excreta. Other species have only been found in decaying plant material (under bark of dying trees). A number have been collected in emergence traps placed in a peat bog in Europe. Adults have been found at the flowers of some Apiaceae and Staphyleaceae. The family is found on all continents.
There are about 255 species contained in 4 subfamilies and 27 genera and subgenera presently recognized in the world. Of the 4 subfamilies in this family, only 2 are present in the Australasian/Oceanian Regions. There are many presently undescribed species in South America and doubtless more to be discovered on every continent.
